Kevin Williamson wrote an insightful piece last year about the true size of our looming fiscal obligations. Assuming radical measures are not undertaken right now, we’re looking at $130 trillion over the next fourteen years. This doesn’t account for the day-to-day operations of federal government: almost all of this comes from underfunded state pension plans, which will almost inevitably be dumped in Washington’s lap with a price tag attached.
$130 trillion, folks. That’s seriously eye-popping. If this nightmare scenario comes to pass, I’m going to start thinking long and hard about leaving for some country with sensible fiscal policy.
