In November 2004, Pew Research’s exit polling among voters showed that 25% supported gay marriage and 35% supported civil unions.

Seven years later, those numbers are now hovering around 50% for gay marriage and higher for civil unions.

The shift towards gay rights in this country has been nothing short of seismic. In seven short years, the body politic has taken an equality issue and moved it from a popular but niche idea (25% support is kind of weak tea) to an issue that has broad support in the body politic — weak, tepid and uncertain support, but one which a majority of voters subscribe to in one form or another.

This is fucking huge.

This eyewitness account of not just the London riots, but the failed social policies leading up to it, is worth reading.
